Dompu is located on Sumbawa Island in eastern Indonesia. Most of the population work in agriculture or fishing.

Plan set up in Dompu in 1996, and works with agencies and organizations related to health, education, food security and child protection. 

Program Highlights

Community Health
Plan has improved community health services through  village health volunteers. Training included nutritional status monitoring, safe child-rearing, and health post management.  There are now 225 trained volunteers in Dompu.

Plan has helped the district health centers combat malaria, as well as diarrhea and other contagious diseases. Pregnant mothers and community leaders have been trained in maternal and child health.  Plan has also occasionally supported surgery needed by members of its assisted families.


Early Childhood Care and Development

Plan is helping to improve the quality of preschool education in 30 early childhood education centers across Dompu. It has trained parents and village volunteers in the early detection of problems in child development. Plan is campaigning for early childhood education, aiming to make children and parents more enthusiastic about the children’s education.

Food and Nutrition Security

This program integrates livelihoods and nutrition programs, with the aim of reducing malnutrition in the district. To achieve this, Plan has helped set up 6 village food and nutrition security committees.

Water and Sanitation

Plan has worked with the villages to establish clean water supplies. and the effective control of sewage. 2 villages have now declared themselves free from open sewage.

Basic Education

Plan’s educational program in Dompu has focused on changing school practices to make them child-friendly. The long-term aim is to eliminate violence, especially violent discipline, and to establish teaching methods which emphasize the joy of learning. There are 18 schools in Dompu, and the campaign continues.

Child Protection
Plan has supported children’s clubs, giving children knowledge of their legal rights. Plan has also created networks with law enforcement, hospitals, universities and government agencies aimed at dealing effectively with child abuse cases.
